Eliot Lipp - Skywave (Cassette)

Eliot Lipp - Skywave on tinted blue cassette tape

“Funky and experimental, crunchy and distorted, romantic, thoughtful, and all around playful from beginning to end.” – Billboard

With influences from sci-fi soundtracks and ’70s and ’80s funk, producer Eliot Lipp crafted a captivating collection of weird, high-definition, melodic beats. Reflecting on the creation of these nine songs, Lipp said he “might have captured everything I want to say in one moment.” His goal with Skywave was to recreate past musical inspirations in a current and relatable way, while also giving himself permission to take risks along the way.

Whether living in Austin, Texas, or Brooklyn, New York, the city of Tacoma, WA has always acted as a home base and a source of inspiration for Lipp. This connection was evident on his previous release, Come to Life (2016, Old Tacoma Records), which evoked images of gray-blue clouds briefly visible through the tops of dense green pines on the lush single “Not Quite Awake.” The song, originally inspired by Emancipator, returns with an official remix from the fellow Pacific Northwest producer.

The album’s collaborations continue with scratches from DMC champion Chris Karns on the song “Joyride.” In addition to this display of turntablism, Karns also provides live drums and vocal samples on the track. The upbeat, shimmering “Reflection” came out of a jam session with Gibbz and Cherub in their Nashville studio. One of Lipp’s biggest musical influences during the creation of the album was a group of producers from Seattle called Fish Tank Friends; most of them contributed to the early stages of “Spiders.”

Skywave marked Lipp’s third collaboration with Detroit label Young Heavy Souls, who released the album digitally and handled the vinyl on their YHS Records imprint.
